Decreasing Ethanol Consumption in Ethanol-Dependent Rats through Supplementation of Zinc and Copper Amino Acid Chelates: A Preliminary Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Objective: Ethanol abuse exacerbates copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) deficiencies resulting in metabolic alterations that frequently lead to increased ethanol intake. This preliminary study examined the effect of Cu and Zn amino acid chelate (AAC) supplementation on ethanol intake in ethanol-dependent rats compared to non-supplemented ethanoldependent rats. Methods: After creating ethanol dependency in two groups of 10 rats each, the animals in the treated group were each gavaged with 100 μg Zn and 45 μg Cu daily as AAC for 21 consecutive days. All animals in both groups had free access to water and also to a 5% ethanol/95% water mixture (v/v) throughout the study period. Measurements included voluntary consumption of ethanol/water and of water and changes in weights. Pathological and histopathological examinations and Cu and Zn analysis of certain tissues were also done. Results: While both groups of animals exhibited initial behavior suggesting ethanol dependency, which was subsequently confirmed by pathological examinations of their tissues, the group receiving Cu and Zn AAC voluntarily began restricting its ethanol/water intake (P<0.001) and increasing its water consumption (P<0.001) compared to non-supplemented control animals. Conclusions: Oral supplement of copper and zinc amino acid chelates appeared to reduce the physical dependency for ethanol. Interactive Effects of Exhaustive Exercise Training and Curcumin Supplementation on PDGF-BB and TGF-β1 Gene Expressions in Alcoholic Rats
Background and Objectives: Curcumin and exercise training are suggested to improve hepatic disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of two weeks of swimming training and curcumin supplementation on platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF-BB) and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) gene expressions following ethanol consumption in Wistar male rats. Materials and Methods: ...
متن کاملP-18: Effects of Ethanol Consumption on Chromatin Condensation and DNA Integrity of Epididymal Spermatozoa In Rat
Background: Alcohol abuse is considered as one of the problems associated with poor semen production and sperm quality. Both acute and chronic alcohol consumption may affect spermatozoal chromatin disorders through apoptosis. Therefore, for the first time, this experimental study was performed to evaluate the effect of ethanol consumption on sperm parameters and chromatin integrity of spermatoz...
متن کاملInfluence of zinc on the status of hepatic trace elements and biokinetics of 65Zn in ethanol treated rats.
Whole body counting studies of 65Zn indicated that the Tb1 (the faster component) was significantly decreased while the slower component (Tb2) was increased significantly following ethanol treatment. Interestingly, following zinc treatment to ethanol treated rats, slower component (Tb2) of 65Zn came back to within normal limits while the faster component (Tb1) got significantly elevated in comp...
متن کاملThe effects of Ziziphus jujuba fruit extract on catalase activity and lipid peroxidation in the heart and erythrocytes of rats following chronic ethanol consumption
Chronic ethanol consumption leads to oxidative stress in the heart and erythrocytes of rats. As Ziziphus jujuba fruit has been shown to have potent antioxidants, such as flavonoids, we conducted this study to evaluate the effects of aqueous fruit extracts from Z. jujuba on rat hearts and erythrocytes following chronic ethanol consumption. Twenty-eight male Wistar rats were randomly divided into...
متن کاملThe Effect of Chronic Ethanol Consumption on Sexual Motivation and Behavior of Adult Male Wistar Rats in the Copulatory Phase
Background: The interaction of ethanol consumption and sexual behavior has been evaluated over the past three decades; however, some studies have assessed how ethanol consumption affects the general behavioral aspects of the copulatory cycle patterns in male rats. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chronic ethanol consumption on adult male Wistar rats' sexual motivation and ...
